Who We Are

After 29 years of public service working for the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board, Tony Jones decided to take an early retirement in June 2011 and form CBL (City of Brotherly Love) Wine Company, LLC.

While a young college student in 1982, Tony began working for the PLCB as part-time Liquor Store Clerk in his home town of Philadelphia. “As I grew up wine was always in the refrigerator at home, so it was natural for me to want to learn as much about it once I began working for the PLCB.”

“In the eighties, I saw customers repeatedly purchasing Valpolicella, Soave and Chianti which inspired me to get more involved with wine.”

During his early years working for the PLCB in Philadelphia, Tony took advantage of the wine & spirit educational opportunities that the PLCB provided, which included correspondence courses and an eighteen-week wine knowledge certification course at L’ecole de Vin in Philadelphia.

During the mid-eighties, the ambitious Tony attended PLCB sponsored wine training seminars that were conducted by now-icons in the wine industry Josh Wesson, Clive Coates and Kevin Zraly. “In the eighties I saw customers repeatedly purchasing Valpolicella, Soave and Chianti which inspired me to get more involved with wine.”

During the late eighties, as a young general manager of the PLCB’s top specialty wine store in the state, located in the historic Bourse building in Old City Philadelphia, Tony’s wine knowledge and store’s wine selection earned him a reputation in the Philadelphia wine community among restaurant beverage managers, aspiring wine lovers and wine collectors as the “must see guy” for your fine wine needs in Philly.

After fourteen years of managing various stores in the Philly area, conducting PLCB employee wine training classes and representing the PLCB at alcohol safety awareness public speaking events, Tony relocated to Harrisburg in 1996 to work in the Marketing department at the PLCB headquarters, the largest retailer of wine and spirits in the United States.

Tony worked several months as a Purchasing Agent in the Special Liquor Order section before being promoted to Category Manager, where for eight years, he managed selecting, marketing and merchandising of major national domestic wine brands for the 650 PLCB Wine and Spirit stores.

“As I grew up, wine was always in the refrigerator at home, so it was natural for me to want to learn as much about it once I began working for the PLCB.”

In 2005, Tony was promoted to Chief of the Luxury Wine Division, where he was responsible for supervising the purchasing and management of the luxury wine assortment in the 76 PLCB Premium Collection stores; forming a luxury wine selection that calmed many critics of the PLCB for having a limited wine selection.

In his final year with the PLCB, Tony worked in an administrative capacity serving as liaison to PLCB’s consumer advisory council, the development of new PLCB store concepts and store rebranding initiatives.

Tony’s twenty–nine years of Pennsylvania market experience, extensive wine knowledge and numerous travels in wine regions throughout North America, South America and Europe has given him a solid understanding of the wine business and allowed him to build valuable long-standing relationships at every level of the alcohol beverage industry within Pennsylvania and around the Globe.

Tony Jones will build CBL Wine Company, LLC into an organization meritorious of the solid reputation, praise and respect that he has achieved in his public service career.
